Zakat Calculation Guide: Nisab, Hawl, and the Basic Calculation
Zakat is not calculated by multiplying everything you own by one rate. First identify the type of wealth, whether its zakat conditions apply, and how nisab and the lunar-year requirement (hawl) are determined for your case. Only then comes the arithmetic. This guide covers general principles and includes a basic calculator, but it is not a fatwa and does not resolve every asset category or personal circumstance.
Important: Use Qintar’s calculator for arithmetic only. For the classification of wealth and rulings on nisab, hawl, debts, and investments, consult ZATCA’s official Zakaty service for individuals or a trusted scholar familiar with your circumstances.[1] [2]
Arithmetic is not a religious ruling
A calculator can perform an operation such as dividing an eligible amount by 40. It cannot determine on its own whether wealth meets the conditions, which nisab method applies, or whether cash, gold, trade inventory, shares, or another category is involved. It also cannot determine hawl or which deductions apply. Separate classification and rulings from the numerical calculation.
ZATCA’s Zakaty service offers a short calculator for cash and an extended calculator for several zakatable items, including cash, gold, silver, and shares. ZATCA describes the service as following Sharia zakat rulings under the supervision of specialists in accounting and zakat jurisprudence.[1]
General conditions to understand
- Full ownership: ZATCA’s individual guidance discusses full ownership among the conditions for zakatable wealth. Ownership rights and claims on an asset may affect a particular case.[2]
- Nisab: This is the threshold associated with a type of wealth. ZATCA’s guidance states 85 grams of pure gold and 595 grams of pure silver. For paper money, the guide links nisab to the lower of the two thresholds. Do not treat this as a fixed SAR amount: the selected method, metal price, and valuation date matter.[2]
- Hawl: For certain assets, including cash, gold, silver, and trade goods, the cited guide discusses a complete lunar year. Crops and fruit have different timing and rules. Newly received wealth and salaries also require case-specific treatment; do not assume every new amount has a separate year or automatically follows an earlier balance.[2]
- Calculation rate: The guide explains that one quarter of a tenth—2.5%, or one-fortieth—applies to wealth for which zakat is due after the relevant conditions, nisab, and hawl have been determined.[2] [3]
Nisab changes in currency terms: The value of 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver is not a fixed amount in riyals. The resulting value can change with metal prices and the method used. Check the current nisab through Zakaty or the religious authority you follow before using the calculator.[1] [3]
How common asset types may be treated
Cash and savings
Cash may include available money and balances that qualify under the ruling you follow. Receiving a salary does not automatically mean the entire salary is due for zakat at once. The remaining balance, when nisab is reached, and how hawl is counted must be applied to your circumstances. ZATCA’s guidance describes different cases for newly acquired wealth.[2]
Gold, silver, and jewelry
ZATCA’s individual guide distinguishes gold and silver held as wealth or for trade from jewelry kept for use. The ruling on jewelry for personal use is a recognized area of scholarly disagreement. Purity and karat also affect valuation. Do not enter jewelry automatically before determining the ruling that applies to you.[2]
Trade inventory
The guide describes trade goods as items prepared for buying and selling. Where the conditions apply, it explains valuing inventory at its market price when zakat is due, rather than only at its historical purchase price. Equipment and operating assets not held for sale are not automatically inventory. Businesses may also be subject to separate accounting and regulatory rules; check the relevant ZATCA materials.[2] [4]
Shares, funds, and investments
Do not assume all shares are treated identically or that the full portfolio value is automatically the zakatable base. ZATCA’s individual guide discusses differences based on the purpose of holding shares and the nature of underlying assets, while the official extended calculator allows shares and other items. Use a suitable official calculation or qualified guidance; price movements alone do not determine the ruling.[1] [2]
Property for rent or sale
The individual guide distinguishes property held for personal use, property held for rental investment, and property prepared for trade. The full value of every property is not automatically treated the same way. Rental income may be considered if retained as qualifying cash and the relevant conditions are met. For property partnerships or complex holdings, consult the guidance and a qualified authority.[2]
Debts and amounts owed
A debt owed to you is different from a liability you owe. ZATCA’s individual guidance describes cases where a receivable is expected to be collected and cases where collection is doubtful or delayed; it also presents a treatment for liabilities owed by the zakat payer. Fatwas and details may differ by case. Qintar’s calculator therefore has no debt-deduction field; do not subtract a liability automatically without confirming the ruling you follow.[2]
A practical preparation checklist
- Choose a reminder date and use the lunar calendar when applying hawl.
- List possible assets—cash, gold or silver, trade inventory, receivables, shares or investments, and property—then assess each category separately.
- Check the nisab value and method for the relevant date using an official service or a trusted scholar; do not reuse an outdated figure.
- Separate personal-use assets from items held for trade or investment, and record the valuation method you used.
- Confirm how debts, jewelry, shares, and newly acquired wealth are treated before adding them to the base.
- Once you have determined the zakatable amount using your chosen authority, use division by 40 as the arithmetic illustration and compare it with the official calculator if your case is within its scope.
Illustrative quarter-tenth calculator
Enter the value you have determined—yourself or with trusted guidance—to be included in the zakatable base, then enter the nisab value you follow. This calculator does not classify assets, deduct debts, or determine hawl or which nisab method applies. It only compares the amount with the nisab entered and calculates 2.5% if the threshold is met.[1] [3]

How the calculator works—and its limits
If the entered amount equals or exceeds the nisab you supplied, the calculator multiplies it by 0.025, which is the same as dividing by 40. If it is below the entered threshold, the estimated amount is zero. This arithmetic condition does not establish whether the wealth meets the other religious requirements. You or a trusted authority must determine the eligible amount, nisab, and hawl before relying on the result.
Tool limits: It does not price gold or silver, update nisab automatically, classify shares or property, or determine whether personal jewelry, newly acquired wealth, or a debt belongs in the base. It does not automatically deduct liabilities. It is not ZATCA’s official Zakaty service and does not collect or send your inputs to a server; the calculation runs in your browser.
Frequently asked questions
Does the calculator update nisab automatically?
No. Enter the value you follow after checking the Zakaty service or a trusted religious authority. Gold and silver prices change, and methods for monetary nisab may differ.
Should I multiply everything I own by 2.5%?
No. First identify assets subject to zakat and determine whether their conditions, nisab, and hawl are met. Then value each category using the relevant method. The calculator does not do that work for you.
Can I deduct a loan or instalments?
Do not deduct them in this tool. Debt treatment is detailed. ZATCA’s individual guidance presents a particular treatment, but it must be applied to your case. Consult a trusted scholar if the ruling is unclear or disputed.
Does this calculator cover companies or zakat returns?
No. This is an educational tool for individuals. Business zakat returns follow separate accounting and regulatory rules published by ZATCA, including the executive regulation, which has a different scope.[4]
Is this article a religious fatwa?
No. It is general educational content describing official references and the calculator’s limitations. It does not issue binding rulings. Contact ZATCA or a trusted scholar for your circumstances.
